Independence from Crooked Teeth?

About 237 years ago, the founding fathers of the U.S of A declared independence from the British monarchy from which many pioneers hailed for several centuries, and who still hoped to tax the settlers of the "New World". While the United States is certainly a melting pot of many cultural backgrounds with many points of view, we all certainly share a number of cultural touchstones, and on days like the 4th of July, we certainly like to celebrate them!

However we couldn't help but wonder about the implications of our independence from the Brits so many years ago, and the cultural differences that have since arisen.

As the premier dentist in North Hollywood and throughout the San Fernando Valley, we see a lot of sparklingly white smiles and straight teeth - and if a common stereotype is to be believed, this is a distinct difference from our neighbors across the Atlantic. We love the English as much as anyone, but I don't think it's surprising anyone if we acknowledge that they are not exactly known for perfect teeth.

Curious dental professionals that we are, we did a bit of research, and learned that A NYC cosmetic dentist named Thomas P. Connelly wrote in The Huffington Post of some research he did on this very subject. Dr. Connelly learned that, despite their reputation - the English don't actually have significantly worse dentistry than anywhere else! However, the stereotype likely flourished due to the centuries of British colonizing. Due to the prolific nature of British literature throughout the globe, the Brits became well known throughout the globe long before modern dentistry techniques...leading to some stereotypes that have refused to die!
